Autism Carers Service
One of the newer services on offer from the Cornwall Carers Service and developing all the time.
The aim of the Autism Carers Service is to provide short term targeted support to carers of adults with autism across the county offering emotional support, signposting and referrals to other services. In addition the service also offers Advocacy, support completing DLA, Carers Allowance forms and Carers Assessments.
The service can support carers and their ‘cared for’ at meetings with other professionals e.g. social workers, job centre, health professionals and will also research services available to ensure clients are able to access the most appropriate service for their ‘cared for’.
The service can liaise with statutory and non-statutory agencies on the clients behalf, as often there is little or no knowledge or experience of autism, to ensure carer and cared for needs are identified and met wherever possible.
In conjunction with the Cornwall Autism Partnership the Autism Carers Support Worker is currently involved with a sub group designing autism training. This training will be delivered by carers and adults with autism to a wide range of professionals.
Although the service has only been running for a few months it is already receiving positive feedback from carers who tell us that it is a huge relief to have someone to talk to who understands what the family is experiencing both in terms of the carer and the cared for.
