Black, Minority and Ethnic Carers Service

Cornwall Carers Service working with Unity Cornwall have recruited a specialist Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Carers Support Worker.

BME Carers have a right to an assessment and access to professional support. The BME Carers Support Worker is one of the specialist services being offered by Cornwall Carers Service to identify BME Carers living in Cornwall who often experience additional obstacles when they need to engage with health and social care services.

Carers from all communities face difficulties in caring for someone, however some of the issues faced by BME Carers are:

• Communication difficulties, including language barriers
• The need for interpreting and translation services
• Lack of understanding of the health and social care system
• Lack of culturally appropriate and responsive services

The word Carer does not exist among many black and minority ethnic communities. Many people, therefore, do not recognise themselves as Carers. They are more likely to see themselves as mother, father, son, daughter etc who cares for a relative who is in need of care due to sickness or disability.

Our BME Carer Support Worker will be working with BME carers and other relevant organisations to support them in identifying appropriate support services and helping to enable Carers to access them.  This is a brand new role within Cornwall and as we develop the service we will update these pages.

In order to access the service please ring our Helpline;
