Young Adult Carers
This page is dedicated to all the Young Adult Carers in Cornwall.
In this part of the Cornwall Carers website we will try to provide you with all the information you need to know about this service if you find yourself in a caring role.
About the Young Adult Carers Service
We manage a user led service (that’s a service directed by you for you, see Getting Involved) for all Young Adult Carers and, in addition, provide a transition link with Young Carers at 17 years of age and a transition for Young Adult Carers into the Adult Carers Service at 25 years of age.
Our purpose is to support Young Adult Carers both in and outside of their caring role.
We are here to support Young Adult Carers not only to continue in their role as a carer and helping to support appropriate caring roles by young adults, but also as individuals. We aim to support and foster the wellbeing and futures of Young Adult Carers.
What is a Young Adult Carer, a (YAC)?
In our service a YAC is someone aged 18 to 25 years who is caring for someone. The “Cared For” could be a Parent or Guardian, Brother or Sister, a Grand Parent or even a Great Grand Parent - in fact, any Family Member, Friend or Neighbour with any form of disability, Physical, Mental or Drink and/or Drug Dependency.
YAC’s are now recognised as a separate group from Young or Adult Carers as they have different needs, falling somewhere between the two.
