How can I identify a Young Adult Carer? (Teachers)

  • Often tired and find it hard to concentrate.
  • Has a lot of knowledge about illness or disability.
  • Often late or miss days or weeks without explanation.
  • Want to keep mobiles on during teaching and contact home a lot.
  • Maybe teased or bullied (especially about family).
  • Has back or neck pain from lifting.
  • Is worried about an ill or disabled relative.
  • Tends to rush home at the end of the day.
  • Has symptoms of anxiety, depression or low self esteem.
  • Has parents or guardians who do not attend meetings.
  • Has false maturity, acts older than they are.
  • Tends to care for others.
  • Doesn’t want to talk about their family.

These are some possible indicators that a Young Person may be a carer, but this list is by no means extensive.
