Have Your Say: Help Improve Support for Carers in Cornwall

05.03.2025

We are inviting carers to share their lived experience through a short optional survey to help shape future support and services, if you think you might be able to help, read on!

Caring for someone you love can be rewarding but it can also be exhausting and challenging - especially when needs increase over time. Many carers tell us that what starts as “helping out” can grow into something much bigger, often without enough support, breaks or time to look after themselves.

To help improve services for Carers across Cornwall, we are working with Cornwall Council on a research project to understand what makes caring harder to continue at home and what support could make the biggest difference. We want to hear directly from carers about their experiences: what helped, what was missing and what could have prevented things reaching a crisis point.

Who is the survey for?

We are especially keen to hear from carers who are supporting someone in any of the following situations:

  • Caring for someone who is older or has increasing care needs

  • Caring for someone living with dementia

  • Caring for a child or young person with SEND and/or autism

  • Young carers supporting a parent, sibling, or elderly family member (including grandparents)

  • Carers who have experienced periods of high stress, safety concerns, or safeguarding-related worries

What are we asking?

The survey is short and focused (should take around ten minutes). It asks about:

  • Your caring situation (for example, who you care for and what support needs they have)

  • What made caring more difficult over time

  • What support helped - or what support was missing

  • When support arrived (early, when things got difficult, at crisis point or not at all)

We will also include a small number of demographic questions (like age range, type of caring role). This helps us better understand whether support needs differ for different carers and when the right support makes the biggest difference.

Your voice, your choice

Taking part is completely optional. You can:

  • Complete the survey anonymously (there is the option to leave a name and email address)

  • Skip any question you don’t want to answer (use prefer not to say)

  • Stop any time

How your responses will be used

What you share will be combined into a summary report for Cornwall Council. The aim is to provide clearer “Real Life“ context to help shape and improve future support for carers, especially support that prevents situations becoming overwhelming or reaching crisis point.
