Who is a Young Adult Carer?

A young adult carer is a young person aged 16-25 who provides unpaid care and support to a family member, friend, or neighbour. They may care for someone affected by disability, physical or mental ill-health, frailty, or substance misuse. Young adult carers can be involved in various aspects of care, including practical tasks, emotional support, and personal care. They may also manage family budgets, collect prescriptions, and assist with medication. The role can be demanding, affecting their health, social life, and self-confidence, with over 45% reporting mental health problems. Young adult carers often face challenges such as balancing education, employment, and caring responsibilities, and they may drop out of college or university due to these pressures.

Young Adult Carer Engagement Workshop

03.09.25

Last month Cornwall Carers Service ran an engagement workshop at Truro Library to gather feedback from Young Adult Carers in Cornwall.

The young adult carer engagement workshop aimed to record the views, opinions and feedback from young adult carers on how the Cornwall Carers Service works for them. The carers were asked what works well, what doesn’t work well, what they want to see in the future service and what are the biggest challenges that young adult carers face today.

Information was gathered both for our own benefit to guide our practice but also to inform our commissioners at the council as they write the new strategy for carers.

The session was run informally and in small groups to allow for personal and individual discussions where carers were able to share their lived experiences and the highs and lows of being a young adult carer.
