Supporting Our Communities Carers: A Celebration of Connection and Care

12.10.25

We're delighted to share the success of two recent events that highlight the vital work being done to support carers across Cornwall.

Carers Group Event: Building Networks of Support

Our carers group event at the welcoming Truro All Saints Church was a resounding success, with 15 carers attending, many accompanied by friends and family members. The turnout demonstrated the real need for spaces where carers can connect, share experiences, and access vital support.

The event brought together a wonderful network of professionals who generously gave their time and expertise. We were thrilled to join:

  • Vicky from Age UK (Kernow Gateway)

  • Teresa Greenaway from the Alzheimer's Society

  • Social prescribers

  • Dementia practitioners

Throughout the session, we had meaningful conversations with each carer who attended. Everyone left with valuable information, advice, and guidance (IAG) tailored to their individual circumstances. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and it was clear the event made a lasting impact on those who attended.

One particularly important discovery was that most carers were unaware they were entitled to a Carers Needs Assessment—a crucial support mechanism that can make a real difference to their wellbeing and ability to continue in their caring role.

Celebrating Excellence at the "Proud to Care" Awards

In addition to our carers group event, we had the pleasure of attending the "Proud to Care" awards, a fantastic celebration of those working in social care across our region. Our very own Kate Shortt and Chantel Kennings, took part in their own time, supporting the scoring process for anonymous carers, which they agreed was both humbling and inspiring.

The event provided an excellent opportunity to connect with professionals from social care and other sectors, including Kate Shields. It was a brilliant mix of people, all united by their commitment to supporting vulnerable members of our community.

A special highlight was meeting Warwick Davis, whose presence added an extra sparkle to an already wonderful evening!

Looking Ahead

Both events reinforced the importance of building strong networks of support and raising awareness of the services available to carers. At Cornwall Carers Service, we're committed to continuing this vital work, ensuring that carers across Cornwall know they're not alone and that help is available.

If you're a carer or know someone who is, please don't hesitate to reach out. Everyone deserves support, and together we can make a real difference.
